The Guys Behind the Blog Vol. 1

Way back when I first started blogging, a few of my favorite bloggers Mal and Stephanie had a really great linkup called Boys Behind the Blog--if you've been a follower of mine since the beginning, you'll probably remember those posts. It was so fun to feature the hubs on the blog each month!

Since then, there have been a few guy-centered linkups floating around Blog Land but none of them have piqued my interest. Which is why I was so excited when Betsy announced on the Peony Project that she was doing a post centered around her fiance AJ and invited all of us Peonies to join her. I absolutely knew I had to join in!

Thankfully Zach obliged so here we go!

By the way am I the only one who thinks this photo is just perfect??? My Montana boy can definitely work the whole cowboy thing...even at the beach.

Ok, to start things off, tell us a little about you.
Well, I'm Zach, but you guys already know that. I have, in my opinion, the best job in the army,--infantry. I like to shoot guns, do anything physical, play video games, and chill with my wife.  Oh, on that topic, the new maps for Call of Duty came out today, babe, wanna play?

my husband in his own words, ladies.

1. Have you ever had a blog, or have you ever considered starting one?
Noooo. That's where you come in....to have a blog and write about me.

2. If you could be a member of any band, which one would it be?
Linkin Park or Avenged Sevenfold I guess

3. Valentine's Day is on the horizon.....are you the date-planner type or do you fly by the seat of your pants? Do you have anything planned for February 14th this year?
I guess that would mean I'm a fly by the seat type of guy because I don't have anything planned. But I do know I won't be freezing like last year so that's a plus.

to explain, last year his unit was out on training all of February and spent the 14th in the rain trudging through the jungle so I think he's just happy he gets to be home warm and dry this year haha

4. Tell us about a date-night-gone-wrong for you and your wife. If it's funny, all the better!
Well I wouldn't say it was a date night gone wrong...but there have been times we've gone out to do something and nothing seems to work out. Like that time I convinced you to try that new restaurant and it took pretty much forever and the food ended up tasting craptastic. So yeah. Does that count?

5. And let's cover all the topics....sports...who are you rooting for in the Superbowl and why?
Patriots because I hate the Seahawks.

Yes, he still holds a grudge against Seattle for beating the Bronco's butt last year--a huge grudge since he's actually rooting for my team to win the Super Bowl!

Well that was super fun wasn't it! I love having Zach take over the blog for me. So what do you gals think? Should we ask Betsy to make this a monthly thing? I think so!!! Click the button below for the linkup and join us!

HAS YOUR GUY EVER TAKEN OVER YOUR BLOG? WHO ARE YOU ROOTING FOR IN THE SUPERBOWL???

Our Hawaiian Bucket List

Sometimes I forget we only have a little over a year left on Hawaii. I feel like during our 2ish years here we haven't done nearly enough of the touristy things you expect to do when you live on an island.

A few months ago, I started a Hawaiian bucket list and, almost a year ago, we've only crossed three things off that list!!! So here I am, at the beginning of 2015, making yet another bucket list for our time here on Oahu. Hopefully, my goal of being intentional this year will help us cross every item off this bucket list come January of next year.

north shore beach footprints

1. Visit another island, preferably Maui or Kauai.

2. Tour the Dole Plantation and taste their pineapple whip.

3. Eat out at three local restaurants.
    Monkeypod Kitchen
any suggestions for our other two?

4. Go to the Polynesian Cultural Center and watch their luau.

5. Attend at least one Eat the Streets food truck event.

6. Hike Koko Head Crater twice.

7. Play a round of golf at one of the many golf courses on Oahu.

8. Do yoga on the beach.

9. Photograph a surfing competition.

10. Hike to all the waterfalls on the island:
Manoa Falls - Completed Spring 2014
      Lulumahu Falls + Pali Lookout
Maunawili Falls - Completed Fall 2013
      Laie Falls

11. Take at least one good photo of a sea turtle.

12. Spend the day at Hanauma Bay.

13. Hike Makapuu Point Lighthouse.

14. Watch the Lantern Floating on Memorial Day.

15. Visit the Honolulu Museum of Art

16. Go spearfishing.

17. Take some underwater photos of fish.

18. Visit the Honolulu Zoo.

19. Spend a day exploring Downtown Honolulu.

20. Take Duke to the beach.

What do you think of our list? I know some of these might make great date nights and I'm excited to put a good dent in these before our PCS next year!

HAVE I MISSED ANYTHING WE JUST HAVE TO DO DURING OUR YEAR LEFT ON ISLAND? I'D LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT PLACES YOU'VE BEEN. DO YOU HAVE A BUCKET LIST FOR WHERE YOU LIVE?

Ten Things Disney Movies Taught Me about Life

I'm a huge fan of Disney movies--like on a scale from 1 to 100, I'm at about 210. I remember as a kid picking out our Friday night family movie and more often than not, it was Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Cinderella, or Toy Story. Now I know that there's a ton of drama when it comes to the Disney princesses but I learned so many life lessons from Walt and his animated friends.

10 things Disney movies taught me

1. It's easy to judge others, but when you put yourself in someone else's position, you can learn valuable lessons.

You think the only people who are people are the people who look and think like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you'll learn things you never knew you never knew.
-Pocahontas

2. It's all right if you're different from others around you. Being unique is what makes you special!

Look there she goes, that girl is so peculiar; I wonder if she's feeling well. Behind that fair facade, I'm afraid she's rather odd. Very different from the rest of us is Belle.
-Beauty and the Beast

3. Have big dreams. And never be afraid to work hard to succeed.

I remember Daddy told me-fairy tales can come true. You gotta make 'em happen; it all depends on you. So I work real hard each and every day, now things for sure are going my way.
-The Princess and the Frog

4. No matter what, it's always better to be honest.

All right sparky, here's the deal. You wanna court the little lady, you gotta be a straight shooter, do ya got it? Tell her the truth!!
-Aladdin

5. There are somethings in life you just can't change. Learn what you can from the past and then keep going.

The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it.
-Lion King

6. Problems will always be a part of life but instead of letting them get you down. Just keep swimming.

When life gets you down you know what you gotta do? Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.
-Finding Nemo

7. Sometimes your weaknesses can be your strengths.

Dumbo, the ninth wonder of the univoise. The woild's only flyin' elephant.
-Dumbo

8. When you work as a team and have a good attitude, you can succeed.

When the road looks rough ahead and you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed. You just remember what your old pal said, You've got a friend in me.

9. Choose to remain kind no matter your surroundings.

Sing sweet nightingale, high above me.
-Cinderella

10. Dreams can change and that's ok. Just don't stop chasing them.

Rapunzel, you are my new dream. And you are mine.
-Tangled

The Start of Project Life 2015 | Elizabeth Loves Crafts

A little bit before Christmas, I was hit with this enormous urge to scrapbook. Which was kind of weird because I honestly haven't enjoyed scrapbooking since my aunt and I did some pages together back in high school. Ok, it's not really that I don't enjoy scrapbooking--I do--but more often than not whenever I'm hit with the "scrapping" bug, I get so caught up with the papers and the embellishments and all the extras that it quickly becomes no longer fun for me.

So anyways, this last time, I decided there had to be an easier way--a sort of middle ground between full-fledged scrapbooking with all the bells and whistles and just inserting photos into a photo album. And that's how I found Project Life.

January Recap of Project Life 2015

Pretty much Project Life is a simplified version of scrapbooking that uses premade paper kits plus photo protector pages to document your year. Usually each spread spans about a week's worth of pictures and at the end of the year, you have an album filled with 52 weeks of photos. The thing that drew me to Project Life was the organization of it all--straight lines, the focus on photos and the story of life rather than pretty embellishments.

I'm sooooo excited to start of 2015 with Project Life and I can't wait to see the finished album at the end of the year!

I'm starting off a little bit differently with my album than most people would though--I'm going back to 2012 to document our wedding before starting my weekly layouts for the year. I have soooo many photos from our wedding and, besides the few in frames, they've just been sitting in a photo album in our spare bedroom the past few years. No more of that!

Ok so granted as you can see, I haven't quite gotten to the journaling part yet. I'm still trying to decide whether to print my thoughts out on the cards or just to write on them. I'm not in-love with my handwriting so it's sort of a toss up. Any thoughts?

This one below is my favorite layout I've done so far--probably because I love all the different views captured of us at the ceremony.

I loved being able to go through all the photos and relive the memories from that special day. This next page especially made me smile. The candid of one of Zach's uncles and my father-in-law sharing a high five always makes me laugh (my father-in-law officiated our ceremony and I remember him being almost as nervous as I was!!!).

The photo on the top right of my sister-in-law and I kissing Zach's cheeks Everybody-Loves-Raymond style and the bottom left of me and my sweet nieces and nephews are my absolute favorites on this page. So much family going on on this page--it makes me happy!

I still have a few pages left to complete our wedding layout--a copy of our invitations to add in, at least two full 12x12 photos of my favorite wedding pictures, and a few more journaling bits--but I've really loved how it's turning out so far.

So you might say that as of now, I'm pretty in love with the whole Project Life thing. So in love that this is probably going to be a bi-weekly thing to go over the layouts I've done and talk about them a little. Like I said in my Word of the Year post, I'm really trying to be more intentional with hobbies other than blogging this year and I love that I've added Project Life 2015 to my hobbies!!

Top 10 Things to Do on Oahu

*Oh and if you have any Hawaii-related questions for me, ask away in the comment section and I'll be sure to answer them in one of the posts or in an FAQ post at the end of the series!!*

Can You Take a Roadtrip in Hawaii??? {January Date Night}

I don't know about you but I love four-day weekends--I'm pretty sure they should be a thing all the time. If they were both Saturday AND Sunday could be recovery days instead of just one recovery day plus one stressful watching-football-all-day type of day...or maybe that's just us.

Anyway, since the Army was giving us a four-day, we decided to put it to good use as our January date night!

To kick off this year of intentional dating (aka Project Date your Husband), I knew I wanted to do something that reminded Zach and I of when we first started dating. One of our favorite things to do back then was taking long drives--since I was a visitor to Montana and completely in love with the wide open spaces, Zach would take me for drives through the countryside and we'd talk, laugh, and sing along to country songs at the top of our lungs (ok maybe I was the only one singing at the top of my lungs but you get the idea). Some of our best dating memories ever involve the car, music, and the open road.

So Hawaii definitely doesn't compare to Montana as far as open spaces go but driving the coastline gives a view like no other. It was a perfectly sunny day for a drive with only a little bit of traffic around Kahuku and Honolulu and gorgeous blue-green water.

So can you take a roadtrip in Hawaii??? Yes, yes, you can--a 100 or so mile one as a matter of fact. This was the first time we actually went all the way around the Windward side in one drive--usually we either turn around at Kahuku or we take the interstate at Kaneohe back to Honolulu.

By far our favorite part of the island, the Windward side of Oahu (the area around Kaneohe through Hanauama Bay) has ocean on one side and gorgeous mountains on the other. It's like a little taste of home but with the beach + an oceanfront breeze. Pretty much perfect!

Pretty much every time we went on a roadtrip "back in the day" we'd end up at a restaurant for dinner and then catch a movie to round out the evening so that's exactly what we did. We headed to Chili's around 6ish. And yes, in case you were wondering, we did a great job keeping our phones away and just enjoying spending time with each other.

Then it was off to the theater to catch American Sniper--which by the way is a fantastic movie. If you haven't seen it yet, GO SEE IT!!!

Alright so now that you've heard about our monthly date night, what about yours? It's time to link up your posts for  Project Date your Husband!

Remember you don't have to be married to participate in #ProjectDateYourHusband2015! If you're dating or engaged and have a fun idea to share, feel free to linkup as well!

We can't wait to read more about how you all are making date night a priority!!

Turkey Meatballs | Slow Cooker Meal

Ever since I opened up my presents Christmas Eve and discovered my brand new slow cooker (ok I totally knew I was getting it before Christmas Eve because...me and surprises), I've been wanting to try something a little different from our regular meal plan routine.

I knew I wanted something that could do double duty as dinner and then the next day's lunch which made meatballs pretty much the best choice for the inaugural run of Senor CrockPot. And I knew I had to give turkey meatballs a try after seeing them used on Chopped.

These tender flavorful turkey meatballs are sure to become a favorite slow cooker meal

The secret to success with these is definitely taking the few minutes to brown the meatballs before putting them in the slow cooker. Browning them helps lock in the juiciness of the turkey and preventing the meatballs from becoming just plain ground turkey after a few hours of slow cooking.

EASY SLOW-COOKER TURKEY MEATBALLS
Makes around 12-15 meatballs
Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 4 hours

1 egg
1 pound lean ground turkey
1/2 c panko bread crumbs
2 tbsp olive oil
1/4 c parmesan cheese, grated
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil
salt and pepper to taste

1 tbsp olive oil, for browning

For the Sauce
1/4 c chopped onion
1 12-oz can diced tomatoes
approx. 1 cup tomato sauce
chopped basil for serving

Place the chopped onion in the bottom of your slow cooker and top with can of diced tomatoes.

Mix all of your meatball ingredients in a large bowl just until everything is combined. Roll into your desired-size balls--mine were a tad bit smaller than a golf ball. Set them aside on a large baking sheet.

Coat a large skillet with 1 tbsp olive oil and heat to medium. Lightly brown meatballs on all sides working in batches of 6 or so. Once the meatballs are browned (about 1 minute on each side), layer them in the crockpot. Once all of your browned meatballs have been added, top with 1 cup of tomato sauce....I used about 1 1/2 cups because we love lots-a-sauce.

Cover and cook for about 4 1/2 hours on high, 6 hours on low. Any leftovers can be stored in a tightly-covered container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.

These go deliciously well over pasta or as meatball subs!

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SLOW COOKER MEAL?

Six Ideas to Jumpstart Date Night

You guys, the first Project Date Your Husband linkup is a week away!!! Are y'all as excited as I am about that? I hope so!

Anyway as I was thinking about ideas for my own January date night, I started to think that sometimes it's not the easiest to break out of the whole routine. So I've assembled six simple ideas to kind of break the 'ice' so to speak and jump start your date night.

Six ideas to jumpstart your next date night
1// Decide on the day of your date night at the beginning of the month.
This doesn't always work out because the hubby's work schedule can be a little unpredictable, but it does help us to have a date written on the calendar....even if we end up having to change it.

2// Purchase items like tickets or reservations in advance.
If I could, I'd do this literally all the time! It's like an absolute guaranteed date night which is pretty great in my opinion.

3// Make a date night bucket list together.
Make sure to include things you'll both really enjoy and things that take one of you out of your comfort zone. For me that would be things like going golfing   nn

4// Not every date has to be extravagant! Try planning a few at-home or group dates too.
One of Zach's favorite dates ever has been the ones we spend playing video games or board games together. Little to no planning involved, just some good old-fashioned fun! Make sure to mix things up a bit!

5// Check out the internet for ideas!
Ok so Pinterest isn't just for wedding planning and DIY's. It's also a pretty great resource for finding date night ideas too. I always find some one-of-a-kind ideas that I can tweak and make our own. And usually I pin them. *Insert shameless plug to go check out my date night pinterest board here*

Follow Elizabeth || Elizabeth Loves Blog's board MARRIAGE | Date Nights on Pinterest.

6// While you're on your date together, put away technology!!!
Ok so maybe you've guessed that technology is not my strong point? Anyway I can't even count how many times Zach and I are on a date and during a lull (like waiting to be seated) we sit there on our phones instead of talking to each other....which kind of sort of defeats the purpose of a date night, ya know!

Alright, so now that you have a few ideas, are y'all going to join Faith, Sarah and I for the linkup next Tuesday? We hope you do!!

Never Have I Ever....Like Ever

Ok, so just writing that up in the title made me remember all the posts I wrote when I first started blogging that were solely "never have I ever's". Honest, it was like an every week thing for me! How I came up with so many things I've never ever done? I dunno but I did. On another note, my roommates and I would play a round of this every night our sophomore year so maybe I just had a ton of practice on this.

Don't worry though this post doesn't mean the return of the never ever's---I just couldn't help joining in when Amanda announced she was hosting this linkup. So without further ado...

NEVER HAVE I EVER...

Written a novel from start to finish.

I've tried more times than I count to write a complete novel and failed just as many times. I do have some really good starts to a novel but I can never seem to see them to completion. Hopefully by this time next year, this never-have-i-ever will no longer be true.

Played a school sport.

Soccer, basketball, volleyball, track? Nope not for this girl who has absolutely no athletic ability whatsoever. I did do ballet, dance, and gymnastics for about 6 years but let's just say I excelled much more in the academic part of life than I ever did the athletic side.

Gone to prom.

Because even at a young age I was a homebody who preferred reading a book to socializing with people. The other explanation would be that I was homeschooled my whole life soooo yeah.

Done well with tunnels.

I tend to have panic attacks--shortness of breath, nausea, light headedness, the whole nine yards. Hence why hiking Diamond Head was a little bit of a challenge for me. Also I'm not a fan of heights.

Gone camping.

Ok so me and insects do not mix very well. Besides the fact that I really love the comfort of a warm soft bed and the convenience of an indoor bathroom. So pretty much the whole sleeping in a tent outside thing?? Yeah, I don't get it.

OK NOW IT'S YOUR TURN!
WHAT'S SOMETHING YOU'VE NEVER EVER DONE??

5 Ways Married Life Changes after You Get a Dog

So last month, Chelsea from the New Wifestyle--one of my favorite blogs, by the way, if you don't read it you should--wrote a post called "Is Your Relationship Ready for a Dog?". I honestly laughed so hard reading it that Zach thought I was watching an episode of Jimmy Fallon (if you've ever heard me watch Jimmy Fallon, you'd know that's a very high complement).

Her post got me thinking about all the ways that Duke has changed our lives since we got him this past June. Here's a few of them--raise your hand if you agree with me.

A look at how married life changes when dogs become part of the family.

1. A lot of your life will revolve around poo or food.
"Did he go poo?", "Have you fed him yet?", "Has he had a treat today?", "Can you wipe your dog's bum?" You never think that life with a pup will revolve so much around bodily functions but it does. By the way, that last question? Yes, add that to the list of things I never ever thought I'd say....or do.

2. You will have to replace important things.
Like soccer shoes, vacuum cords, video game headsets, video games themselves, oh and a few socks. And then after the first few things are chewed and their appropriate punishments are doled out, you'll start to understand your dog better and you won't have to replace so many important things. Until one day, you wake up to find the cord for the iron chewed into little bitty bits. *deep breaths, people, deeeep breaths*

3. No matter what size the bed is (or the couch), there will never be enough room.
I've only recently found this out because we've only recently allowed Duke to sleep on the bed with us. And wouldn't you know that Duke is more like his mom and likes to hog all the space AND the blankets! There are so many times I've woken up in the middle of the night to find Zach freezing his sleepy bum off with no covers. Along with that, do you know how hard it is to play a tug-a-war game for blankets with a sleeping dog?? Sleeping with a pup is not easy, my friends.

4. You'll get a teensy bit of practice for any kiddos that may come along.
I thought we were going to be the world's most firm parents when the time came......now that I'm getting a sneak peak of parenting with Duke?? Yeeaaaaahhh we're like the least firm puppy parents ever. I honestly pity Zach if we end up with a little brown-eyed girl one of these days--mush, I tell you, the man will turn into mush.

How can you resist this face? | 5 Ways Dogs Change Your Life
But I mean, honest, how can you resist this sweet face??????

5. You'll learn more about each other and the way you work as a couple.
Having a dog is a pretty big responsibility--you have to feed it, bathe it, take it out to do its business, and give it lots and lots of love. It's fun to figure out how we both juggle those responsibilities and how we work together as a team.

Even though we decided to rescue him to raise his quality of life, I think Duke has done more to raise ours! No matter how much our lives have changed since his arrival, getting Duke has been the best bad-breath, puppy adventure ever.

ALRIGHT MY FELLOW PUPPY OWNERS, DID I MISS ANYTHING?

Can You Take a Roadtrip in Hawaii??? {January Date Night}

WHAT WAYS DOES HAVING A PUP CHANGE YOUR LIFE?
